High School Sequence of Classes:

Grade 9:         Math (Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1)  Geometry for more advanced students.

                        Science (Physical Science or Biology)

                        English (Literature and Grammar)

                        Social Studies (Geography and/or World History)

                        Electives: Computers, Art, Music, or Industrial Education

                                         Foreign Language, Phys. Ed.

 

Grade 10:       Math (Algebra 1 or Geometry)  2nd year Algebra for more advanced.

                        Science (Biology or Physical Science)

                        English (Literature and Grammar)

                        Social Studies (World History or American History)

                        Electives:  same as 9th, plus 2nd year Foreign Language and Health

 

Grade 11:       Math (Geometry or Algebra 2/Trig) Advanced: Stats/PreCalculus

                        Science (Chemistry)—3rd year optional

                        English (American Lit. & Writing)

                        Social Studies (American History)

                        Electives:  see 9th and 10th.  Also, Speech, Accounting.

 

Grade 12:       Math not required, but can take higher level, such as Calculus.

                        Science not required, but Physics is a good option.

                        English (British Lit. & Compostion)

                        Social Studies (American Government & Economics)

Electives:  any 9-11 or enroll in a college course or apprenticeship/internship.

 

Other options may include Michigan Virtual High School, where AP and Basic classes are offered.  There is a significant fee required.  Website:  www.mivhs.com

 

Bob Jones University, Christian Liberty Academy, and A Beka are good sources for “enrollment” in an actual school program.  CLA, for one, will keep track of grading and keep up your transcript. 

 

For students who are not necessarily “college-prep” (4 year university), courses such as Consumer Math and Nutritional Science may be substituted. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

College Admission Requirements/Recommendations:

English:             4 years

 

Math:                           3 years (through Algebra 2)

 

Science:                        2 or 3 years Lab Science

 

Social Studies:              3 years (including American History & Government)

 

Foreign Language:        2 years same language (recommended, not required)

 

PE/Health:                    1 year

 

Arts:                             Some require one year of music, art, or related area)

 

 

Timeline for College Preparation:

11th grade:                  PSAT offered at local high schools in October.  Used for scholarships as well as practice for SAT.           

                                    Take the ACT in April or June.  Can be taken again.

                                    Visit colleges—keep grades up.

                                    MEAP offered at local high schools late April—early May

                                   

 

12th grade:                  May retake ACT in October or December.

                                    Submit college applications in the fall.

                                    Attend College Fairs.

 

                                    January:  Fill out Financial Aid Form (FAFSA)

                                    Deadline for MI is February 21.

                                    Spring:  MAKE A DECISION!!  Schools cannot make you commit until May 1. 

 

Note:  Kellogg Community College (for example) requires students to take the COMPAS

Test, for placement in classes, so don’t stress out too much over the ACT.
